Booking an Appointment

Dr Nikolic consults privately through Brisbane Breast and Surgical Care at two locations — the Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower and Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. She also holds public appointments at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH) and STARS.

Private Appointments

To book a private consultation, you will need a referral from your GP or another specialist. Referrals are valid for 12 months from the date they are written.

Once you have a referral, you can book an appointment by contacting the rooms:

Public Appointments

Public appointments at RBWH and STARS are managed through the hospital outpatient system. If your GP has referred you through the public system, the hospital will contact you directly with your appointment details. Wait times for public appointments vary depending on clinical priority.

Developer note: display private and public pathways in clearly separated panels or cards. Private pathway should be visually prominent as the primary booking action.

Private Fees & Medicare Rebates

Dr Nikolic’s private practice operates on a fee-for-service basis. Fees vary depending on the type of consultation or procedure.

Consultations

An initial specialist consultation attracts a fee, a portion of which is covered by a Medicare rebate. The difference between the fee charged and the Medicare rebate is your out-of- pocket cost (sometimes referred to as the ‘gap’).

If you have private health insurance with extras or specialist cover, your insurer may cover part or all of the gap — check with your fund before your appointment.

Procedures, Surgery & Endoscopy

If a procedure, surgery or endoscopy is recommended, the rooms will provide you with an estimate of fees and expected out-of-pocket costs before you proceed. This estimate will include:

  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Estimated anaesthetist’s fee (if applicable)
  • Hospital and facility fees (covered by your private health insurance if you have hospital cover)

Medicare rebates apply to most consultations, procedures and endoscopic examinations. Your Medicare card should be presented at every appointment.

Payment

Payment is due at the time of your consultation. The rooms accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Medicare rebates can be claimed on the spot via HICAPS or submitted to Medicare directly.

If you have any questions about fees, rebates or expected out-of-pocket costs, please contact the rooms before your appointment — the team is happy to help.

Developer note: consider presenting fee information in a clean summary box or table if specific fee amounts are provided. Keep the tone transparent and practical — patients value clarity on costs.

Your First
Appointment

Being referred to a surgeon can feel like a big step — and it’s completely normal to have questions before you arrive. Here’s what to expect when you see Dr Nikolic for the first time.

What to Bring

Please bring the following to your first consultation:

  • Your referral letter (if you have a copy)
  • Any recent test results, scans or imaging (CT, MRI, colonoscopy reports, blood tests)
  • A list of your current medications
  • Your Medicare card and any private health insurance details
  • A list of questions — write them down beforehand so you don’t forget

If you’ve had previous surgery or treatment related to your condition, any discharge summaries or operation reports you can bring will be helpful.

What to Expect

Your first appointment is a consultation — a conversation about your condition, your symptoms and what the options are.

Dr Nikolic will review your referral, take a thorough history and examine you. Depending on your condition, she may request further investigations (such as imaging, blood tests or endoscopy) before recommending a management plan. Not every consultation leads to surgery — in many cases, the first step is simply understanding what’s going on and discussing the options available.

You’re welcome to bring a family member or support person with you. Having someone there can be helpful, especially if there’s a lot of information to take in.

Appointment duration: First consultations are typically 30 minutes. If additional time is needed, it will be scheduled.

Preparing for a Procedure

If a procedure, surgery or endoscopy has been recommended, Dr Nikolic and her team will provide you with specific pre-operative instructions tailored to your situation. The information below is a general guide — your individual instructions may differ.

You will be given specific fasting instructions (typically no food for six hours and no clear fluids for two hours before your procedure).

Some procedures require bowel preparation — you will be given detailed instructions if this applies to you.

Let the rooms know about all medications you take, including blood thinners, supplements and over-the-counter medications. Some may need to be paused before surgery.

Arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. You will not be able to drive yourself.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day.

Preparing for a Colonoscopy or Gastroscopy

If you have been scheduled for a colonoscopy or gastroscopy, you will receive specific preparation instructions from the rooms before your appointment. In general:

Colonoscopy: You will need to complete a bowel preparation (a prescribed drink that clears the bowel). Detailed instructions will be provided, including dietary restrictions in the days leading up to the procedure and fasting requirements on the day.

Gastroscopy: You will generally need to fast (no food or drink) for at least six hours before your procedure. The rooms will confirm specific timing.

For both procedures, you must arrange transport home — you will not be able to drive after sedation.

If you have any questions about preparation, please contact the rooms.

After Your Procedure

  • You will receive written discharge instructions before you leave hospital.
  • A follow-up appointment will be arranged — typically within one to two weeks of your procedure.
  • If you have any concerns after your procedure (unexpected pain, bleeding, fever or anything that doesn’t feel right), contact the rooms during business hours or present to the nearest emergency department after hours.
  • It’s normal to feel tired after surgery or sedation. Give yourself time to recover and follow the activity guidelines you’ve been given.
  • Phone: 07 3870 3205 (Wesley) or 07 3226 3800 (Fortitude Valley) — for post-operative
    queries during business hours.
